I disagree. Strongly.

Fighters get neat prizes like armor and swords when they win
tournaments. I've seen $300 swords given away as tourney prizes, at an
event where the A&S contest winner got a book.

And what if that book isn't useful to the artist? What generic artist
prize can one possibly buy in advance, that would reward scribes,
bards, and woodcarvers equally?

Money. That's it. Maybe in the form of gift certificates, but really,
that's still money. With money a scribe can afford real vellum, a bard
the esoteric book on Laplander poetry she's been eyeing, and the
woodcarver a nifty new hand tool.

I've long wished there was something else we could give as A&S prizes
that was as universally cool & useful, but there just isn't.
