Note there are several way you can easily keep locally modified software
up-to-date.

Perhaps the easiest it by using CVS to check out the current code branch
you're using and making your local changes in the checked out working
directory.  Any future "cvs update" will merge new changes from the
repository with your local changes, and in most cases this works
automatically without conflicts.

Another way is to use a package construction framework such as NetBSD's
pkgsrc (which is portable to an ever increasing variety of non-NetBSD
systems).  These kinds of frameworks have mechanisms for including local
patches in the build.

I've been asking myself the same question for several years now, ever
since I created a very similar patch too.  :-)
