Additional mailstore for archives?

It's very possible that a better answer will come but...
given your scenario, you could always mount a remote nfs volume
at /var/spool/imap/f/user/forrie/little_used_directory (probably would
have to have the mount done as cyrus:mail and refer to it only when
desired.
