all processes fail with signal 9

I have now put
 seenstate_db: flat
 mboxlist_db: berkeley

into /etc/imapd.conf, but I am still getting all processes fired up by master 
failing with "signaled to death by 9".

Any ideas how I can diagnose what I have wrong?
