It doesn't need to be shared -- it can be a per-user mailbox just as
easily.

You don't need to worry about verifying the authencitity of the email (as
useful as SMTP AUTH is, it isn't quite so easy to apply at the application
layer, and also doesn't work across authentication domains... e.g. I can
read my IMAP folders from an AOL account, but I might not be able to get
an SMTP AUTH message through)
