I'm just a novice myself but maybe you need to start saslauthd? (maybe
in /usr/local/bin) Don't forget to give it an authentication mechanism,
-a getpwent or -a shadow.

This only applies if you have sasl_pwcheck_method: saslauthd in your
/etc/imapd.conf.
