restoring old mail messages

I got into problems updating to 2.1.12. In the process I "lost" the maiailboxes
and the db files.  The system no longer recognizes the old messages.  I saved a
copy of the old messages and they are still in the active imap INBOX
subfolders, but they can not be seen by user programs.  Is there any fix or
work around for this problem?
