cyradm login failed

Hello,
Whenever I try to login to cyradm:

[cyrus at parent cyrus]$ cyradm --auth login localhost --user cyrus

I get the following error:

Login failed: user not found at 
/usr/local/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.0/i686-linux/Cyrus/IMAP/Admin.pm line 114
cyradm: cannot authenticate to server with login as cyrus

I know that user exists in /etc/passwd because, as you can see from the 
bash prompt, I logged into that system with the user cyrus.  Am I using the 
wrong authentication mechanism?  Should I add the user to the sasl user db? 
If so, then how?  Any help would be much appreciated.
