Issue on Solaris10-x86 with sasl and openldap

I recently upgraded openssl to 2.1.21.

I'm running openldap 2.3.21 and openssl 0.9.8d

I get this when I try to access our ldap server:

SASL/EXTERNAL authentication started
ldap_sasl_interactive_bind_s: Unknown authentication method (-6)
        additional info: SASL(-4): no mechanism available:

Can anyone shed some light on what's going on?  It was working prior to
the upgrade to sasl
