Safe to delete apparently stale / aged 'spool/sync.' directory?

AFAIK the sync. folder is used by the sync_server (receiving side of
the syncronisation)
as tmp storage for the incomming mails/data. The the number (subfolder
name) is the pid
of sync_server process.
On clean shutdown these files/folders should be clenad up, but if the
server crashes
there might be some old files leftover.
IHMO it should be safe to delete the folders on the active server
(where the sync_client is running)
and old folders where the corresponding process is nor running any
more on the receiving (sync_server)
side.
