Hello dancers,

We are sending out this form
<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScRSRnaSeDRCKVWCjRvUSqLxB12vpAcsVq1SRaRGRqm61QYyg/viewform?usp=sf_link>
to gauge interest in attending the Rochester Dancesport Festival in
Rochester, NY, hosted by James Chin at Lilac Dance Center on 10/19-10/20
(workshops 10/19, competition 10/20). Currently, we are attending OSU
(9/28), Carnegie Classic (10/12), and DCDI (11/2). The club is open to
sending the team to Rochester because it is a helpful competition for
dancers looking to dance at the USA Dance Nationals in the spring.
Additionally, Rochester is generously offering many scholarships to dancers
to make attending as easy as possible. We do not know the details at the
moment, but we will reach out to all who are interested as soon as we have
the final information.

Since Nationals is a large comp, dancers must qualify for events. Dancers
are classified as “collegiate” if they are currently enrolled in full-time
education (undergrad or grad) or have graduated less than 6 months ago.
Dancers are considered “adult” if they have graduated over 6 months ago.
Collegiate dancers automatically get ONE level in the collegiate and adult
events, but they can receive ONE EXTRA level in adult events only if they
qualify at that level as adults do. Adults must qualify for ALL events.

There are several paths to qualification. In short, each dancer needs 6
points individually. You do not need to dance with the same partner, but
you do need to dance at the correct level. We strongly recommend attending
3 Collegiate Challenges: OSU, Carnegie Classic, and Rochester Dancesport
Festival. Regardless of your placement at any of these competitions, you
would receive 6 points (2 from each comp), which qualifies you for
Nationals.

The other options would be to attend a Qualifier OR a Qualifier and a
Challenge Comp. The Qualifiers that are most accessible to us would be MAC
in Newark, NJ (Jan 2025) or Midwest Regional DanceSport Championships in
Chicago, IL (10/18-10/20). However, there would be no assistance from the
Club for these comps. At a Qualifier, if you PLACE in the top 50%, you
receive 6 points and auto-qualify. If you do NOT place at a Qualifier, you
receive 4 points and would need to attend one Challenge to receive the
remaining 2.

Here is an example situation with myself (Abby), Aaron, and Hannah. I am
considered a student because I am a CMU undergrad. Hannah is also
considered a student because she is a Duquesne grad student. Aaron is
considered an adult because he graduated over 6 months ago. Therefore, only
Aaron needs to qualify.

Aaron and Hannah intend to compete Gold Smooth at Nationals. Aaron and I
are attending OSU and Carnegie Classic, dancing Gold Smooth. We each
receive 2 points from each competition. Aaron and Hannah are attending
Rochester, dancing Gold Smooth. Aaron and Hannah each receive 2 points.
Aaron has now acquired all 6 points necessary to dance at Nationals. Hannah
and I can also attend Nationals because we do not need points to dance. If
I were to attend Rochester with another dancer, I could have Gold Smooth as
my extra adult level and dance with another student in Silver or Novice.

We understand this is a complicated process that requires a lot of thought.
Please ask me or Christine if you have any questions.

Happy Dancing!
