I am teaching Story Telling Alice to Grade 8 students in New Delhi, India. I would like to know if I can enrol for the Alice Institute in June 2011? Would the Alice 2.2 workshop be helpful for me, since I have started my students on Story Telling Alice?

Hi David,
I would love to have access to your resources as well. I've always
taught C/C++ the "old school" way by teaching structured first then
branching out into OOP in the second course, but now I'm using Alice in
my intro course and I'm struggling a bit with the "objects first"
approach...

I basically re-thought the whole teaching process based around
object-oriented programming instead of structured programming. I based
it heavily on the resources available from the Alice site, but put it
all into my templates and teaching style. I deliver lectures each week
which are followed up by worksheets that students must complete for
homework (they get the answers from the lectures). We then have three
follow-up practical classes where they must do specific tasks based
around Alice. Sometimes I just get them to do an Alice tutorial, other
times I give them complete instructions ... do this, do that, then do
this etc. I can send you a copy of our teaching schedule if you are
interested and some sample lectures, worksheets, tasks. We also get
students to do a practical test in a 50 minutes session and offer them
an opportunity to present a project demonstrating their skills. I
haven't written the project specifications yet. We teach NS Diagrams as
a planning method instead of flowcharts.

or CS1 course.

In the File menu of Alice 2.2, there is an option to "Export to video?"
However, Export to movie has been "hit & miss" -- mostly because of problems with sound files not being easily integrated.
Sound files need to be clipped to be the length actually played in the animation.
For example, if a sound file is 1.5 minutes long but only 20 seconds is being played in the animation, Alice still loads the entire sound file, but the underlying operating system does not release the sound process when the animation finishes. (Alice has a hard time recognizing when an animation is over.)
The end result is that when Quicktime is trying to record the captured video with the sound file, it is denied access to the sound file because the sound file is still open.
This causes the whole process to go out of whack.
The best fix is to edit the sound clip to the actual length of the animation. Then when it is finished playing it is released. This allows Quicktime access to the file during the recording phase.
We have always recommended Audacity as a good open source sound editor, but there are other tools out there that will work as well.

student work. Unfortunately, it is not open source. However, there is a
complete 30 day trial version, and the educational pricing is not bad
(approx $200).
The nice thing about Camtasia is that you can select any number of

used it to edit both the video and sound if I want just a small clip to
embed in a presentation.

An "Alice Workshop for Educators" will be held Monday, July 25, through Friday, July 29, 2011 at Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi.
The goal of the workshop is to train educators in effectively using the Alice 2.2 programming environment at the secondary and post-secondary education levels. Participants who successfully complete the workshop will earn 29.5 CPE credits.
