Other Types of Lists

Extraneous lists can be created to enhance the use of the main mailing lists. These additional lists include digests, silent lists and bboards. Each is discussed below.

Digest Lists

List Members normally receive each message that is posted to a mailing list. The digest option holds the messages and sends a batch of messages at one time. A digest list is a separate mailing list and is normally called <list>-digest. Because the digest is a separate list, it has its own configuration, information and introduction files and must be subscribed/unsubscribed to independently. The messages contained in the digest are identical to those sent individually, therefore, it is not likely that an individual would subscribe to both versions of the list.

How To Request a Digest List

A digest version of a mailing list can be requested at the time the original list is created or later using the Request a Digest web form from the Andrew Sponsors and List Owners section of the main page.

Tips for Configuring and Maintaining
  • When the digest list is created, the configuration file is copied from the original mailing list.
  • A digest is sent automatically once the digest_maxlines or digest_maxdays value has been reached. The List Owner can force the distribution of a digest by using the mkdigest command via e-mail.

Silent Lists

Silent lists do not receive mail messages and are named <list>-silent. If a message is posted to a silent list address, it is automatically forwarded to the main list. Silent lists are normally used for the following purposes:

  • To create and maintain a list of addresses that are permitted to post to the main list. In this case, the silent list is referenced by the restrict post option in the configuration file of the main list. Members of the -silent list are given permission to post to the main list.

  • To allow a group of addresses to post to the main list without being subscribed to that list. In this case, the -silent list might be included in the restrict post option for the main list in addition to other mailing lists. This is different from the last scenario because the silent list is not the only group permitted to post. This use of silent lists merely allows the members of the -silent list to post to the main list without subscribing and receiving messages from the list.

How To Request a Silent List

A silent mailing list can be requested at the time the original list is created or later using the Request a Silent Mailing List web form from the Andrew Sponsors and List Owners section of the main page.

Bboards

When the main mailing list is created, you have the option to have a Bboard (Bulletin Board) created. The bboard name is then added as a subscriber to the main list and receives the same messages that are posted to the main list. If you did not request a bboard at the time the main list was created, one can be created using the Request a Bboard Mailing List web form. The bboard name will be internet.<list> where <list> is the mailing list name.

Note: Be aware that this bboard is not secure and can be viewed by the campus community. There are no restrictions for posting or reading these bboards.

How To Request a Bboard

A Bulletin Board (bboard) can be requested at the time the original list is created or later using the Request a Bboard web form from the Andrew Sponsors and List Owners section of the main page.
