[SCA-BMDL] Fwd: Frick buys 16th century manuscript page

Greetings from Myfanwy!
What I remember most about the Frick (I've been there a couple of
times) was that they have a lot of Pre-Raphaelite era paintings hanging
up, and a few months ago I went to see a special exhibit of stuff from
the Arts & Crafts Movement, which kind of dovetails/overlaps with the
P-R.
For those who don't know what I'm talking about, the Pre-Raphaelites
were a group of Victorian era painters and writers who were --
effectively -- the Scadians of their day (I'll bet a lot of you have
posters of paintings of knights on horseback, etc, that look like book
illustrations -- those are probably P-R works). The Arts and Crafts
Movement sort of came out of that (and involved a lot of the same
people, like William Morris), as a reaction to overblown, overstuffed,
over-cluttered, and often shoddily constructed Victorian design.
My last semester in college, I was taking an English lit class called
"King Arthur". The regular professor missed the first two classes,
which were picked up by other people. The second one was on the
Guenevere tradition, and was taught by the English Dept.'s resident
Victorian expert. To prep for the class, we had to read the last two
sections of Tennyson's _Idylls of the King_ and in class we read
William Morris' _The Defense of Guenevere_. The guy goes "Does anyone
know who William Morris was?" and I go "Yeah, he was one of the
Pre-Raphaelites, wasn't he?"
"How did you KNOW that?" "Uh, because I'm a PAINTING major...."
BTW -- for anyone interested, in the poem she defends herself from
charges of adultery by basically pulling a Jessica Rabbit ("I'm not bad
-- I'm just drawn that way"!) ....
