Hi all,

If you are looking for a way to thank a scribe for a
scroll you received, want to encourage a budding (or
long time) scribe, would like to donate scribal gear
to a kingdom or baronial gift basket, or have started
looking for next year's 12th night presents for that
special scribe in your life, art store sales are great
places to go.

Here's a short list of appreciated gifts:

+ 90 pound or more, hot press (smooth) paper. This can
come is big sheets or pads. White or off-white is
most useful. Black or burgundy can be a special
treat. (Colored vellum is period.)

+ Gum Arabic

+ Ox Gall

+ Small sable brushes, especially ones that form a
curved point when wet. Think sizes 00 to 2, YMMV.

+ Art pencils of different hardnesses. I link H or HB
but YMMV.

+ White erasers or gummy erasers

+ Small white palettes

+ T-square and other cork backed rulers or straight
edges.

+ A variety of calligraphy nib holders. Avoid the ones
with the attachment on the side. That's for an out of
period script.

+ India ink, Higgins Eternal ink, or walnut ink

+ Small nibs that aren't Speedball nibs. Most
calligraphers start out on Speedball, so it is a treat
to receive something different.

+ Blotting paper. Scribes, especially calligraphers,
can put this between their work and work surface to
pick up drips and smears.

Why isn't paint on this list? Because paint has color,
many modern shades of which don't imitate period
pigments. It can be a hard thing to choose. Besides,
this barony is blessed with a supplier of period
pigments.
