[SCA-BMDL] Sewing Class (October) [LONG]

"Creating a Simple, Historically Accurate Outfit in an Afternoon"

On Sunday, October 9 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. come to the campus of
Carnegie Mellon University (Porter Hall, Room A18B).  This class is geared
towards people who have some sewing experience, which means that you know
how to use a sewing machine and have a few basic sewing skills.  We will
cover the following things in this class:

-Fabric conservation; whys and hows
-The mechanics of fabric.
-Cut and Construction
-Finishing and Embellishment
-Accessories

The clothing that we will be making is a simple pattern for a man's tunic
and a woman's dress using the patterns drafted by Sarah Thursfield based
on extant garments from England during the Dark Ages.  There will be a
handout provided.

You will need the following when you arrive to class:

Sewing machine (including extra needles)
Women will need 5 yards of fabric, washed and ironed
Men will need 4 yards of fabric, washed and ironed
Thread to match your fabric
Measuring tape
Pins
Scissors to cut fabric
Tailor's chalk or fabric pencil/pen that can be seen on your fabric
Sewing needle(s) for finishing your garment

For fabric, I would suggest either cotton, clothing weight linen, or a
linen blend.  The cotton and the linen blends are available at JoAnn
Fabric, the linen would need to be ordered online.  The color choice is up
to you, choose something that you like and that looks good on you.  If you
are interested in making something that is in a color that would be
accurate for the time period, here is an incomplete list of colors that
would have been available during the Dark Ages:

sewing machine and some basic sewing skills.  This class will be held at
my home in Hampton Township, and the class size is limited to 3 people.
