How to use OPENSLIDE_DEBUG variable?

Hi together,

does somebody know how to use the OPENSLIDE_DEBUG variable (e.g. with an example)?

The help page https://openslide.org/docs/debugopts/ says I can pass it. But where exactly?

Where do I define it?

I use the compiled C++ libraries for Windows, but could also cross-compile on Linux.
