Well, it's not just about the magnitude.  The deltas between coordinates 
of adjacent tiles have much less variance in the XML than in the 
position map, which is also evidence of lower resolution.

As I keep pointing out, the actual behavior of the Windows viewer seems 
to refute this.

Look, your hypothesis is easily tested.  If you rename the "Scan info 
layer" or "ScanInfoLayer_XMLInfoLevel" in the Slidedat, so that the 
Windows viewer can't find the XML data, does the viewer display seams?
