Hi All,
Your midterm will be on Wed 2019-03-27 in class. It will be closed book,
and no computers / calculators / etc. can be used. It will cover
everything done in class after and including the multivariable chain
rule up to whatever I can cover about tangent spaces of manifolds on Friday this week.
In light of your midterm there will be no homework this week. Instead I
put up an optional homework with a few problems on it. Most of these are
good practice for your exam so I recommend looking them over. Some of
them will be assigned as part of your regular homework next week.
I also put up 269 midterm 2 from previous years. (Note I did things
a little differently before. In particular, I used a different, but
equivalent, definition of manifolds. Thus the solution to the last
question on last years midterm is a bit different from how I would do it
based on the definitions I used this year.)
You can expect at least one homework question (with possibly an evil
twist) to be on your exam.
The best preparation for an exam in a course like this is a consistent
and regular work. I recommend reviewing the material early, and trying a
variety of problems of different levels. Most people understand this
material best if you've had time to digest it, and practice doing
problems on your own.
I will also announce some extra office hours on Monday next week
shortly.
