seen state not updating

I have a user who cannot change the "seen" state of messages in her inbox.  
There is no problem with messages in sub-folders. A client which allows you to 
change the seen state of a message has the item greyed out when working on the 
inbox.

I have used cyradm to look at the acls and that shows the user has "lrwipcda", 
just like everyone else's.

I imagine this to turn out to be quite simple, but I just can't think where to 
look next!

Any ideas?
