sasl error

does anyone have any idea what this error code is-

imap[29352]: badlogin: [192.168.21.177] plaintext holdie at sales.charmer.com SASL(-13): authentication failure: checkpass failed

i know the password is correct. what does  sasl(-13) signify?

i'm using sasldb2 and i entered the user. however, every user i enter, fails on the password. i've thried outlook express and netscape as imap clients and still no go.
