Correcting my mistake

why guess?

chown -R cyrus:mail /var/spool/imap

or whichever directory is your partition-default in /etc/imapd.conf

this will set the entire tree to be owned by cyrus:mail if that is what
you are looking for. Probably best not to muck around in this tree as
root.
