You are right but using special "map" does not require creating special 
patches for sendmail and postfix.

There is also another possible way:
Making cyrus capable to "auto create" mailboxes for existing LDAP 
entries. It will allow MTA to simply check LDAP entry presence and send 
the message even when mailbox have not been created yet.
