Sendmail problem

RH9 w/ cyrus-imap 2.1.13 and cyrus-sasl-2.1.13 using sasl to connect to
a ldap server.

I used cyradm to setup a user and connected to the server with
evolution.  However, when I try to send a test email by telnet to the
smtp port.  I get sendmail errors like:
