database problems

I am trying to get cyrus running but am problems with with the database.
I have installed cyrus on Mandrake 9.1 using the Mandrake install package.
However when it start I get the following messages in the logs:

p, assuming the worst: No such file or directory
The database files don't exist (I have set up all the relevant directories)
and I am not sure how to create them. Can anyone advise me on how to solve
this problem?
