Thanks for the info Jeremy - I'm still not brave enough to touch RH8, so 
this is good to know.

I may be wrong, but I believe the problem Mark is having is documented in

This is due to an OpenSSL detection patch I submitted, which unfortunately
lost a line somewhere between submission and application...
