Some people have claimed problems with berkeley DB in general, but from a
theoretical standpoint the above should give the best performance (and
ease of use, in the case of subscriptions)

It's an anachronism.  Berkeley 4.1 is supported as of 2.1.10.

In Cyrus 2.2 not only is this documented but it will be the default (and
db3 will be renamed berkeley)
