skiplist is recommended above all the other backends for the mailbox list.
If I were to rank them, I'd rank them:

1. skiplist (best)
2. flat
3. db3 (worst)

Berkeley DB being the default was an unfortuinate choice, and this is
being fixed in 2.2.

Note also that these rankings are only for the mailbox list, other
databases have different priorities, and have different recommendations
(there's several posts on the mailing list about this, so look it up in
the archives).
