No, the messages aren't in kept a database backend. "flat" refers to the
fact that the database is basically plaintext. (a "flat file" as it were).
Other database backends are db3 (Berkley DB) and skiplist (a cyrus
specific version that give better performance for certain applications
than either flat or db3).
