telnet hangs on the sasl2 part

No, That is not a problem for him. Client-side SMTP AUTH has nothing to 
do with server-side SMTP AUTH.

Relof tries to get server-side SMTP AUTH to run with cyrus-sasl. Though 
he has specified

smtp_sasl_security_options = noanonymous

without any reason.
