Sorry to take so long to reply to this.
My test locally failed with:
./configure: line 9791: syntax error near unexpected token `newline'
./configure: line 9791: ` yes:no:'
Wow - after spending 1/2 an hour I have been unable to find any documentation
on AS_SEARCH_LIBS on either google or the autoconf manual. My version might
cost one extra test each time you run ./configure, but at least it's simple,
easily understandable and _works_. Bah.
