Which could be handled by converting from external to internal
representation in the command line arguments presumably?

Hence my argument for calling them something completely different
depending on what format they are and being really clear with
the variable naming and documentation so there's never any
doubt about exactly which varient you're suppose to pass to any
particular command line or API.
