All dancers receive* two free lessons* anytime during the semester (NOT
including last week's recruitment events). After that, lessons are *$40 for
students *(regardless of grade and/or school) and *$80 for non-students*
for the entire semester. Please bring cash or a check made out to "CMU
Ballroom Dance Team". Payment of lessons signs you up as a Ballroom Dance
Club Member, enabling you to attend any lessons, come to socials, and be
subsidized for competitions throughout the semester!
*Levels and Auditions:*
The club will not be holding auditions this semester. For the
professionally taught Advanced, Intermediate, and Newcomer lessons, we
recommend people *brand new to ballroom dance to attend the Newcomer level*.
Dancers around a *Bronze level should attend the Intermediate* lessons, and
dancers* Silver and above should attend the Advanced level*. If you feel
like you fall between two levels, we recommend you attend both classes for
the first two weeks to see which is better suited to your level, and stick
with that one for the rest of the semester.
*Styles:*
You will notice that our lessons are split into four different styles of
dancing.
*International Standard* and *American Smooth* lessons take place on
Mondays (Tuesday this week). These are the "princess" dances including
waltz, tango, foxtrot, quickstep, etc. They move around the floor, stay
mostly "in-frame", and are performed with long ballgowns.
*International Latin* and *American Rhythm* lessons take place on
Wednesdays. These are the "sassy" dances including chacha, rumba, jive,
swing, samba, etc. These are more stationary, use more "hand-holds", and
are performed with short skirts.
*We teach all four styles* and encourage our dancers to take advantage of
this variety!
*Shoes & Attire:*
You do not need anything special to come dance! You will see many dancers
wear various types of ballroom specific shoes and/or attire. These things
will be available to borrow and/or buy later in the semester. For now, we
ask that you *please wear athletic/comfortable shoes and clothes*. Sandals
fall off, and jeans restrict movement. Both are highly discouraged. Some of
our professional instructors may prefer that you dance in socks, so be
ready for that if you are comfortable.
*Partnering:*
As always, *no partner or experience is necessary*! We encourage everyone
to rotate partners and get to know everyone throughout each lesson! For
more advanced dancers interested in competing with a dedicated partner, we
encourage you to attend lessons and start talking to people! We will do our
best to assist with partnerships, but there is no formal partnering
process.
As always, our primary goal is for everyone to be comfortable and have fun!
Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns!
Hope to see you all on the dance floor!
Happy Dancing,
