William,
I have forwarded your question to the dev team for their thoughts and comments.

One question… Did you test what happens when the students save their project locally (say to the desktop), and then manually move the project to their network device / location?

All the best,
Don Slater

I have tested this as well from my Tech Office, and can confirm that the save takes the same amount of time (the project being saved is the "First Encounter Example.a2w). When I save the file locally to my machine, the save time is less than 30 seconds. What I would like to know is if this is normal for the program to take longer saving to network storage than locally? Is there some hidden file that is being transferred with the project when it saves to a network?
