I also experience this problem from time to time (it seems to occur in
patches), and have also found that closing Alice and reopening it will
usually resolve it.

I only use Windows 10 machines, but it also used to occur on Windows 8, and
it has happened on all of the different machines I've used at one time or
another.

I have noticed that it seems to occur more often when I am opening a number
of projects in succession, for example when looking at student work.
Although of course it's only noticeable if I'm actually editing the work.

I have wondered whether it's related to background Java processes not
terminating correctly sometimes.

I keep intending to try to track and document it more diligently, but of
course am usually in a rush when it happens, and just want to get it fixed
so I can go on with my work. I have tried a few times to replicate it, and
will certainly let you know if I ever do.

Cheers
Margaret
