alice-teacher Error when saving- no backup folder

Emily,
It sounds as if your students do not have write permission to the location on the computer that they are trying to save to? Or that perhaps, the system is not allowing the creation of a new directory in that space.

In Alice 2, when a project is saved, Alice also creates a directory for backups of that project, saving a copy of that current version there as well. Two copies of the project at that time are being saved, one in the specific location, and one, which is also time-stamped in the backup directory.

By default, Alice will save five of these time-stamped versions in the backup directory, and then replace the oldest with the newest version, maintaining the five most recent saved versions.

It is possible to change the number of backups saved in the Preferences section of Alice.

Since the error message seems to indicate problems with the creation of this backup directory, you might go to preferences and indicate that you want no backups saved, and then try to save a file. If it then saves, you might need to come up with a different backup strategy for your students and your system.

This backup system was implemented in Alice 2, as this allowed students to not have to start all over when their programs crashed.

Please let us know if this is not the issue.

All the best,
Don Slater
