Hi Kathy,

Attached are:

1) Course Description (which sounds a bit generic, but shows prerequisites)

2) The original Alice 2.X program used to capture a video for promoting the course. Of course you would probably want to change the text objects.

I attempted to include the ADVERTISING VIDEO that was sent from all the Electives teachers to their students, but it was too large for our email (even compressed). It was simply a screen capture (I think I exported from Alice) of the attached Alice program. I ask the teachers to send a group email to their classes with an embed code so the video began playing when the students opened their email. I actually had a 9 fold increase in enrollment the following semester.

I am looking for course descriptions for stand-alone Alice classes, middle school and high school level, that have been successful in grabbing student attention and generating interest/demand for the course. If you have any flyers or posters, these would also be helpful!

Thank you!

Hi

I just completed my first Alice project with Year 7 and 8, as an enrichment task in Maths.

We used v2.4.

It was a great success -thank you Carnegie Mellon!

The students loved it. For most of them, it was their first peek under the hood of a computer to see how it works.

They also enjoyed that their creativity was used in combination with their 'Maths brain'.

The project was planned to last for a term, doing work on the project for one hour every week or so,
but in fact ran intensively for a bit over a week, as I had to take leave unexpectedly.

I have a background in computing, which helped, but the Alice tutorials meant the kids were independent learners anyway.

They made narratives or games.

At the end, I put the kids' work (as 'Alice movies') into imovie to showcase their work.

I have attached my project specification.

Hi, All!

I am excited to offer basic Alice for my gifted 4th and 5th graders - witch, cauldron, spoon...in our first ever tech camp from July 6-10. Any advice or tips please? Thank you.

Samantha
