It seems that when a new billboard or 3-D text is added to a world, an Alice bug report window comes up when they try to access the subparts of another object in the world. You might upgrade to the latest version of Alice 2 (2.4.2) to see if you have any better success. I am not surprised that you are having problems with Storytelling, as that is a modified version of Alice 2, by Caitlin Kelleher for her PhD dissertation. And Alice 2.2 is old enough that changes on our end or within the tools you are using may contribute to your difficulties.

Does anyone have any good tutorials for importing ASE files into Alice? I tried exporting a simple cube from Maya to 3DS Max to ASE file out. But then importing into Alice thew an exception error ... File corrupted or bad format.

I was using a 64-bit verision of Maya and 3DS Max. Not sure what Alice is, but I have version 2.2 as well as StoryTellingAlice. Same error in both packages.
