Sorry for this post, but I really need to vent. They are cutting Alice for next year in my school. I then went on explaining how it is a really good program and gets the students ready for AP Java. My vice principle, who does have a math background, says arent' they just making movies. Also there isn't any prerequisite on the AP homepage for Computer Science. I then began to explain how it's not just about making movies that we discuss all these wonderful computer terms and that it helps to develop an understanding of Java. I also mentioned that you wouldn't expect a student to go into AP Calculus without some prerequisites. And there is nothing on AP homepage about requiring students to take pre-Calc first. Our conversation ended because of parents needed to see her.
Basically I guess my question is this, does anyone have any suggestions on ways to recruit students and/or sway administration to be more in favor of this class.

Thanks for listening,
Eric

I wanted to use a while(ans == "yes") loop but couldn't make it work.

I do not want the user to be able to press the arrow buttons on the keyboard to start a race between two objects until the countdown is finished. I tried a delay in the event listener but it did not work.

I teach Alice as part of my Multimedia class; grades 10-12. It's only three weeks but it's a great into to coding. Plus I have them do the Code.org "puzzles". So total, it is 5 weeks. The rest is spend in HTML, audio and video. Something is better than nothing.

Eric,

What is going on with our education system not supporting these types of
programs. They obviously have not read up on the latest technology which
is important. The east coast schools are all supportive of these programs.
They are some of the best schools in the nation.

Eric, I have the similar problems, but with convincing adults. Try to do a
curriculum begining with making movies and then coding with Alice 2.x. Then
put into curriculum java script, and after this Alice 3.x . Principle who
have a math background and did not coding every day can not judge about
coding. You need to include an object orientation coding theory into yout
curriculum. If this is not enought you are probably working with politic
which is not keen to the computer science.

The way to do this is to control the event with logic, rather than a timer. Create a boolean variable called ?gameOn? or something like that that is initially false. When the countdown is finished, set the variable to true. In the arrow buttons events, put the action inside an if statement so the movement only occurs if gameOn is currently true.

I?m still on Alice 2, but there should be something similar in Alice 3.

Then use the variable to prevent the arrowKeyPressed event
listener from taking action until the boolean variable becomes true, as
shown here:

boolean must be true or arrow press is ignored

Of course, you will need to set the variable to true when your countdown
is completed. Then, the arrow keys will become active.
