Hi Bob,

The only differences I see at the OS and the Alice application locaton. I have Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit) and I have Alice 2.3 in the Program Files folder. Out of those two I believe you are correct about Alice being in the Program Files folder.

I copied my Alice 2.3 from the Program Files folder and placed it in the My Documents folder. I then renamed the Alice2.3 folder in the Program Files folder. I tested the new copy of Alice2.3 in the MyDocuments folder to make sure it opened and it did fine. So I went to my .a2w file and right clicked it so I could select which app to open it with, I navigated to the new copy of Alice2.3 in the My Documents folder and it would not open. It opened Adobe Reader instead (not sure why). I tried this a couple times and it still would not assocated the .a2w file with the Alice2.3 application in the My Documents fiolder. I then deleted the copy of Alice2.3 from the My Documents folder and returned the name of my orignal Alice2.3 folder in the Program Files folder and than re assocated the file with the Alice application in the Program Files folder. Not it's back to normal.

Just to see if it works I would just try and copy your Alice2.3 folder over to the Program Files folder and try to open with again without deleting the Alice2.3 folder in the My Documents folder and test it.

Let me know what happens.

Thanks,

Rex

Hi Rex;

Your computer must be setup differently than mine. I had tried that in the past and it didn't work. I tried it just now, carefully following your instructions and it still doesn't work:

I've got Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit running on an Acer laptop.
Alice is installed in the My Documents directory

I right clicked on an .a2w file and choose "Open With"
 The "Choose the program you want to use to open the file" window popped up.
Ignored the two choices offered by the OS (Firefox and IE) and clicked on "Choose default program..."
In the new pop-up ignored the Recommended Programs (Firefox and IE) and clicked "Browse..."
Clicked on the arrow next to "My Documents" to expand the folder selections
Scrolled down to the "Alice 2.3" folder
Clicked on the folder to open it.
Clicked on Alice.exe (My default is to show known extensions, I've been a programmer for 40+ years)
Clicked on the Open button
Windows went back to the "Choose the program you want to use to open the file" window but did Not show Alice as an option.

Just to verify that it's Alice that Windows (on my computer) hates, I hit browse again and navigated down to and selected java.exe
This time it showed a plethora of choices (my favorite word since I saw the movie "The Three Amigos")

The only thing I can think of off-hand is that Alice.exe is not installed in the "program files" directory so is not recognized as "real" application program. Or perhaps there is a registery entry that I need to add.

Any enlightenment would be greatly appreciated.

Hi All,

What I have done is right click the .a2w file and clicked open. When the popup window opens and ask to "Open With" I will browse for the Alice application on my hard drive and select that. I would also make sure that the "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" check box is checked. This assigns all files with the .a2w extension to open with the Alice application.

Thanks,
Rex

Jackie;

I'm guessing from your email that you are trying to run an Alice xxx.a2w file by double clicking on it.
the Alice 2 World (.a2w) files that Alice produces are really zip files that contains the elements of the world. Unfortunately Windows ignores the A2W extension and treats it as a .zip file.

The only way I've found to run an Alice 2 World is to start Alice and open it from within Alice.

Best
Bob Durtschi

I have a student in my class who downloaded Alice and then appears to have started running it from the zip file. Now when he tries to open files from Windows explorer he gets a message that "you are attempting to run Alice from a zip file."

So I downloaded Alice again and then unzipped it to the Program files directory and tried again to open a file from Windows explorer and get the same message.

I am baffled by this. Any suggestions?
