But does this mean that the legs actually walk, while the body moves?

Subject: Re: alice-teacher Alice & Math?

I have used a cow walking toward (and through) a bush. Then we discuss how to compute the distance and using variables. of course, in Alice the cow then walks to the center of the bush so we talk about subtracting width and measuring from the absolute center.

On another note, we are now running a 64 bit system and Alice will not load at all. I may have to switch to another language. Any suggestions?

I'm using Alice for my Year 8's, an also teach some of them for year 8 Maths. I have found a good deal of crossover when discussing variables in Alice and comparing them to unknowns in early Algebra. Maybe only 1/2 a lesson discussion per student though, followed by a lesson or two of designing worlds utilising variables. Most of the lessons are self-paced.

Have your students created Alice programs to teach others about math?
As part of a project funded by the National Science Foundation, we have taught over 300 middle school students to program games in Alice. Now we want to use Alice to teach students math. If you have done this, or are interested in trying, we want to talk to you. Please contact Shannon Campe at shannonc at etr.org.
Please do not email back the entire listserv J Thanks!
