alice-teacher running Alice 2.2 in Oracle's Virtualbox

I am running Virtualbox version 3.2.10-r66523 on a PC
whose OS is Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.

Inside Virtualbox is a fully patched Microsoft Windows XP.

Alice 2.2 version August 1, 2009 (that date shows in the
start-up box after double-clicking the Alice executable)
runs just fine inside Virtualbox.

However, the latest Alice 2.2 available (download file is
dated September 14, 2010, when retrieved with the wget
command in Ubuntu) fails to start and shows an error
message.

   ...application failed to start because the configuration
   is incorrect...

Does anybody have any ideas what the problem might be?
