Happy Holidays, Penn Ave!

We are planning a holiday event to get everyone at 6555 Penn Ave in the
holiday spirit! This is for ALL staff working at Penn Ave - ASTM, Digital
Libraries, Warehouse, and all who work in the main office.

A potluck luncheon and a "white elephant" gift exchange will be held on
Tuesday, December 18, 2007 from 11:30am-1pm in the lunch-conference room
(#123)

If you're interested in participating in only the potluck luncheon or only
the white elephant exchange.that is fine. Participation is NOT required,
but spectators are welcome! Fun is to be had by all, so we encourage you to
participate in both!

Information about both the luncheon and the gift exchange are below:

-------------------------------------------

POTLUCK LUNCHEON - 11:30am-12:15pm

1.	Sign up! - If you plan to bring a food item to the potluck and
enjoy in the tasty food that your colleagues bring to our event, please sign
up on the sheet in the kitchen to indicate what you intend to bring. The
idea is to try to have a nice variety of food, so by signing up we'll know
what food to expect.

* Lorrie is providing all of the paper products for our luncheon (plates,
cups, napkins and plastic ware) - so please only sign up for food or drinks.

2.	Bring your food! - We'll have the conference room set up and ready
for your food dishes at 11am, so if you have to set something up for your
food item, you can begin doing that at 11am. (Remember.we do have an oven
in the kitchen if your item needs warmed up before the luncheon begins)

3.	EAT! - We'll begin eating at 11:30am on the dot, so bring your
appetites!

---------------------------------------------

"WHITE ELEPHANT" GIFT EXCHANGE - 12:15pm - 1pm

***Remember: the gift exchange is optional. If you only want to sign up for
the potluck luncheon and not participate in the gift exchange, that is fine.

What is a "white elephant" gift exchange?! Here is the general description
and rules:

Initially, all of the wrapped gifts are placed onto a gift pile (or on the
conference room table). The gifts should NOT have any tags on them - they
should not be labeled to show whom they are from, nor do they list a
recipient.

We'll put everyone's names in a hat (everyone who brought a gift and is
participating in the gift exchange), and then draw names to see who goes
first, second, and so on. The first person selects a gift from the pile,
opens it for all to see, and keeps it for the time being. The next person,
determined by drawing names from a hat, can either choose to take an
unopened gift from the table or steal a gift from any previous gift-opener.
If an unopened gift is selected, the gift must be unwrapped. If at any time
a person's gift is stolen, that person can immediately unwrap a new gift or
steal another person's gift. This process repeats until a person chooses to
unwrap a new gift (as opposed to stealing a gift), at which point play
proceeds to the next person. After all turns have been taken, the person
who went first has the option of taking one more turn since this person has
the disadvantage of not knowing what any of the now-opened presents were at
the beginning of play.

Owners of opened gifts MUST keep them visible for all to see and hold them
up when requested.

Sound like fun?! It is! We hope you want to participate! Here's what to
do:

1.	Sign up! - If you plan to bring a gift and participate in the gift
exchange, please sign up on the sheet in the kitchen. Please ONLY sign your
name to indicate you are participating, please DO NOT put what gift you are
planning to bring. That is a secret!
2.	Buy a gift! - There is a dollar amount limit to the gift, keeping it
affordable for everyone. Please limit your gift purchase to $15.00. You
may choose to buy a couple of small gifts that add up to approximately $15,
or one larger gift for $15. The choice is yours. Be creative! (***FYI:
Please try to buy a gift that is unisex, and that both your men and women
colleagues would enjoy. Our hope is that everyone leaves the exchange with
a gift they like and can use.)
3.	Wrap your gift! - Remember, no tags. Half of the fun will be not
knowing who bought what!
4.	Bring your gift! - Don't forget to bring your gift in on Tues, Dec
18th and put it on the gift table in the conference room when you come for
the event.
5.	Give a gift, and get a gift! - The exchange begins after we're done
eating, around 12:15pm. For those who wish not to participate in the gift
exchange, you are still more than welcome to stay and observe. :-)

-------------------------------------------

Sign up sheets for both the potluck and the gift exchange will be in the
kitchen at some point on Wed, Dec 5th. Please sign up ASAP.

Happy Holidays!

Sincerely,

Tiffany, Dawn D., and Lorrie (Event planners)
