Hi everyone, For the upcoming Accessibility Lunch Seminar, we have Josh
Myers-Dean joining us in-person as a guest speaker: Abstract: Image
segmentation is the task of assigning a category to each pixel in an image
and is crucial in various applications, from image editing to enhancing
accessibility through navigation and image exploration. Existing
interactive segmentation algorithms face two main limitations: they often
necessitate knowledge of the user's preferred selection tools or explicit
instructions on inclusion and exclusion criteria, leading to a cumbersome
user experience. This is particularly problematic in creative workflows,
where segmentation is merely a preliminary step. Furthermore, automatic
segmentation algorithms often struggle with granularity, typically halting
at part-level segmentations due to lack of available data. This granularity
issue overlooks a critical desire within the BLV community for algorithms
capable of offering detailed information upon request [StanglAssets18],
limiting the potential to enhance automatic magnification tools or
descriptions when shopping online. Josh will discuss approaches to
redefining the interactive segmentation problem to accommodate diverse user
needs. Additionally, he will introduce his efforts in developing a dataset
designed to support subpart granularity, aiming to enable algorithms that
offer hierarchical segmentations and in-depth image details. He will also
explore potential opportunities these advancements present for improving
accessibility applications. Speaker Bio: Josh Myers-Dean is a 3rd year
Ph.D. student in Computer Science at the University of Colorado Boulder
working with Danna Gurari. Josh earned a B.S. in Computer Science from
Western Washington University and has interned with the Pacific Northwest
National Laboratory, Adobe Research, and the Allen Institute for Artificial
Intelligence. His research focuses on creating efficient, user-friendly
segmentation algorithms to reduce friction in pipelines that rely on image
segmentation, such as image editing, as well as creating algorithms that
can segment a region at multiple layers of granularity. His work has been
published in computer vision venues such as WACV and his work is supported
by an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship. Join us at noon in NSH 4201.
Looking forward to this interesting talk! Thanks and regards, Peya
