On the topic of playback control, there's a nice little app for the
iphone/iPod touch platform that does just that:

It allows you to speed up/slow down tracks on the fly and doesn't go
onto the next track unless you want it to.  There's a free version and a
$3 (not sure the difference), so the barrier to entry is low...
