re: cultural purpose of simple dances:

Remember that one of the major differences betwwen modern times and SCA 
period is that period society was closely chaperoned.  Dancing was a rare 
socially-sanctioned opportunity to hold hands and chat with your actual or 
potential sweetie with her mother out of earshot.  I think this is one of 
the reasons why the parallel mixer dance format is almost nonexistent in 
the SCA-period dances we know of.
