Also, although you typically see these jackets in early 17th century portraits, they were in use at least as early as 1585, so not out of SCA period.

Not so remote as you might think - Mistress Elizabeth Talbot was one
of the principal artists on the work; she did several of the
embroidery pieces on the front of the jacket.
