[SCA-BMDL] The Many Faces of Piracy

 Hello!

Since so many of us are interested in Piracy, I wanted to point out an event
I've been working closely on...it's free and open to the public, all ages,
and it ought to be a lot of fun.   It's called The Many Faces of Piracy, and
it's at California University September 17-19th.

I've included the schedule below, if anyone is interested!  Also, if you are
interested in Historical Combat, there is an event not listed on the
program...on the 18th, at 6:30, in the Blackbox Theater, there will be a
fencing practice/discussion with the Historical Maritime Combat gents.

*September 17th, 2008:*

All Activities take place in Steele Hall Main, Save the 7:00 p.m.
performance, which will be in Steele Hall Blackbox theater.

Session one: 11:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m.: Piracy and the Constitution.
Presenter:  Nick J. Sciullo.

Session two: 12:00 p.m. -12:30 p.m.:  Teaching with Primary Resources:
Piracy.   Presenter:  Nicholas C. Roberts, California University of
Pennsylvania.

Events: 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.: Sea Chanteys.
Performer and Interpreter:  Geoffrey Kaufman Folk singer and chanteyman.

Session three: 2:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.:  Democracy and Piracy Round Table.
 Presenters:  Melanie J. Blumberg, John Cencich, Andrae Marak, and Michael
Slaven,   California University of PA.

*September 18th, 2008*
All combat demonstrations will be outside Natali, or in the Blackbox
theater, depending on weather.  All other sessions will be in Natali
Performance Center.

Session Four: 10:00 a.m. -11:00 a.m.:  What Pirates Wore Presenter: Cynthia
Vallar.

Demonstration One: 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.: Historical Maritime Combat:
 Presenters: John Lennox, Chris J. Franklin, Steven Huff.

Session Five: 1:00 a.m. -2:00 a.m.:  Surgery During the Days of Piracy.
 Presenter: Cynthia Vallar.

Demonstration Two: 2:00 p.m.: Historical Maritime Combat: Boarding
Techniques.

Demonstration Three: 3:30 p.m.: Historical Maritime Combat:  Swordplay.

Keynote Event: 6:30 p.m.: The Republic of Pirates.
Keynote Speaker:  Colin Woodard.  Book signing to follow.

Costume Contest: 8:30 p.m. How to Talk Like a Pirate .
Presenters:  Captain Jack Sparrow and Captain Charity Morgan

Event: 9:00 p.m.: How to Talk Like a Pirate, followed by the movie Captain
Blood.  Natali Student Center, Natali Theater.   Movie provided by SAI.

*September 19th, 2008*


 All combat demonstrations will be outside Natali, or in the Blackbox

Black Whydah: At the Intersections of African, African-American Histories
and the Modern Romance with Pirates.
 Presenter:  Tim Konhaus:

 Session Ten: 1:00 p.m. -2:00 p.m.: The Art of Piracy:  A Collaborative
Panel.  Presenters: Erin Beveridge  and Linda Rosefsky, West Virginia
University.

 Session Eleven: Friday, 2:00 p.m. -4:00p.m.: Buccaneer's Blood in Our
Veins? Presenter: Christopher Williams, University of Warwick.

 Caribbean Crucible: The Place of Pirates in the Utopian Tradition,
1620-1726.  Presenter:  Isaac Curtis, University of Pittsburgh.

 Piracy in the Age of the Crusades: an Introduction.
 Presenter: Nikki Goodrick, University of California, Santa Barbara.
