*February 20 2008 - Beginning Pewter Casting
8:00 to 10:00pm, William Pitt Union, Room 934
Clemente de Warrewyk *

February's A&S Night will be a discussion on how to get started in pewter
casting, with a focus on casting in soapstone. Pewter casting is a fun &
rewarding activity which was practiced throughout much of the middle ages.
In this discussion, I'll be talking about things like:

   - what you need to get started and where to get it
   - basic techniques for making moulds, with an emphasis on carving
soapstone (but other types of moulds will be covered too)
   - Safety! Equipment, practices, etc
   - Resources, references, and where to go from here?

What there won't be is a demonstration or any hands-on work. Alas, the
venue isn't suitable for actually melting metal, or carving moulds (which
can be messy in its own right). But you should leave with an understanding
of what is required to get started and some ideas for projects. (Hopefully,
when the weather warms up, a nice outdoor demonstration can be arranged.)
