So once you have it on your machine, you can use it to build out applications, or incorporate it in your code. You can just run the .exe files in the zip. For example, you can enter this in CMD: openslide-write-png.exe CMU-1.svs 10 10 0 1000 1000 x.png to read a 1000 x 1000 pixel area from a slide image and write it to a PNG. If you want a GUI, you'll need a program built on top of openslide, or you can write your own program (of course).
